Kiwiberry (Actinidia arguta) ‘Issai’

This fast-growing vigorous perennial climbing vine is very hardy and produces smooth hairless grape sized fruit with the same delicious taste of the kiwi fruit.

Kiwi Berry ‘Issai’ originates from Japan and is a rare self-fertile medium vigour variety that will begin to fruit in its first or 2nd growing season.  It is a vine that can be grown on a trellis, fence or pergola.  It is a very hardy plant that is frost tolerant and disease resistant. It is also known as hardy kiwi, baby kiwi, arctic kiwi and hardy kiwifruit.

Ideal for small backyards it is a low chill variety but  the vines are very frost hardy ( -15 degrees C) and it will fruit well in both cool and warm  climates. In QLD and areas with hot summer climates, it is very important  to grow the vines in a sheltered, partly shaded position protected from hot dry winds and intense summer heat in the hottest parts of the day. They will crop well in partial sun and are shade tolerant.   Requiring regular watering throughout the growing season they prefer well-drained fertile soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.   On a trellis the vines are planted 3m apart.

The kiwiberry is closely related to the kiwi fruit and has high levels of anti-oxidants, vitamin c, vitamin A and potassium.

These self-fertile kiwi berry vines  are 6-8 months old, 40-70cm tall.

Please note we cannot send trees to WA or NT due to state quarantine restrictions.

We only send trees early in the week to help ensure they arrive at their destination before the weekend.
