Description

Longans (Euphoria longan) are a close relative of the lychee but the trees are more cold hardy, faster growing and easier to manage.  The fruit is similar to a lychee with juicy white flesh but compared to a lychee the longan has a sweet musk flavor.

The longan trees are seedlings of the the commercial Hawaiian variety “Kohola” which is grown for it high yield and vigor.  The young trees are 8-12 months old, 25-40 cm tall, sun hardened and ready to plant into a larger pot or straight into the ground.

Longans are  sub-tropical trees suited to climates that have mild winters. They fruit well from Sydney to Cairns and warmer coastal areas of Southern Australia.  Trees will grow in colder areas but must be protected from frosts when they are young. They are much more cold tolerant than lychees.

Growing to around 7 to 8 metres longans make a beautiful specimen tree with glossy dark green leaves and rounded canopy. Masses of small yellow aromatic flowers are produced in spring. The new growth has a vibrant red flush before turning green.  The fruit ripens in late Summer  to Autumn / Winter depending on the area.

They are suited to well drained fertile soil in a protected sunny aspect.

Some regard the longan fruit as a “super food” with a range of health benefits .. they are good source of Vitamins A and C, Iron Magnesium, Phosphorous and Potassium.
