Description

The pomegranate, Punica granatum, is an ancient fruit originating in the Middle East and is regarded as one of the earliest cultivated fruits. The popularity the fruit has grown in recent times in Australia and throughout the world. This has been attributed to some extent to the growing evidence that the antioxidants and other compounds in the fruit have major health benefits and may be beneficial in the fight against some cancers.

The pomegranate is very adaptable tree and will grow in regions ranging from temperate to tropical. It is deciduous tree  that is generally best maintained at around 2- 3m high but can reach up to 3-5m if it is left unpruned. Like most fruit trees it prefers a well draining soil with a sunny aspect.   The attractive trees are frost hardy and make a very ornamental garden specimen. They are suited for growing in large pots and in general will start to fruit once the trees get about 1 metre tall.

Our pomegranate  trees are are 5-6 months old, 15-20cm tall are sun hardened and ready to plant into a larger pot.

Wonderful is the most widely planted commercial pomegranate variety in California. It has large attractive fruit with a deep purple/red glossy appearance. The arils and juice are deep crimson with a sweet tangy flavour; seeds are small and tender and the rind is of medium thickness.  The major supermarkets in Australia usually stock Pomegranate Wonderful fruit that has been imported from the US.

Pomegranates can be used for both fruit and juice. The health food industry is interested in the juice for the high levels of anti-oxidants contained in each fruit. Each fruit can produce as much as 50% of its weight in juice.

We only send trees on Monday to ensure they arrive at their destination before the weekend.
Please note: due to quarantine restrictions plants cannot be sent to Northern Territory, Tasmania  or Western Australia.
